**Temporary internet files
Scott from Random Lake, WI, has a question for his wife. His wife noticed that there are pronographic images in her temporary Internet files folder. Other people in the office notice the same thing. She wants to know how those files got there and if there is a way to track Web usage on the machine.
Chances are, someone is surfing the Web after normal business hours. It's a common occurrence in offices. To get rid of the temporary Internet files on your computer, read this article: www.techtv.com/screensave...8,00.html.
To prevent people from using your computer, you need to lock it down with a password. Talk to your office's IT department to see if you can get your computer password protected.
**Expand a router
Chris from Bangor, ME has a Linksys router with all of its ports being used. How can he add more computers to the router?
All you have to do is add a hub to the router. You can buy a cheap 12 to 24 port hub, connect it to the back of the router, and voila! You have more ports.
**Share broadband
Rob from Rapid City, SD wants a cheap way to split a broadband connection between two computers. Rob has a cable modem connection, and both computers have Ethernet.
The cheapest way to share the connect requires:
+ Crossover Ethernet cable
+ An additional Ethernet card on the PC connected to the cable connection (this computer will have two Ethernet cards total)
+ Analog X's Proxy
What you need to do is:
1. Connect the two computer together using the crossover cable
2. Run Analog X'x Proxy on the computer with the cable modem to share the connection.
Here are the important links:
+ Sharing a broadband connection: www.techtv.com/screensave...37,00.html
+ Analog X's Proxy: www.analogx.com/contents/.../proxy.htm
+ Create an Ethernet crossover cable: www.techtv.com/screensave...11,00.html
**Portable Web site
Dan from Hanover, PA wants to create a Web site that is self-contained on a disk. Instead of posting the pages on the Web, the pages would be on the disk.
It's pretty easy to do. You can use CD Start-it, which will allow you to create a Web site on a CD. Download CD Start-it at www.webattack.com/get/cdstart.shtml
The other way to do it is by writing the HTML yourself. All you would do it create the paths in the HTML to the local files. It's more difficult than using CD Start-it, but it's a good way to learn HTML. To find out more about HTML linking, read this article: www.techtv.com/callforhel...60,00.html
**System CD
Jeremy wants to know if you can burn an operating system on to a CD, and then run a computer using the OS on the CD instead of the OS on the hard drive.
You can do it, and it is done frequently and easily in Linux. ISP do this all the time to protect the OPS from hackers.
It's really complicated to do this with Windows. We'll do more research on this and plan to do this as a full segment on the show.
This article explains how to make a bootable Windows CD: www.heise.de/ct/Service/E...99/11/206/
