Dear family, friends and Oasis animal shelter,
On Tuesday, November 24, 1997, my husband, mother in law and I arrived at
the Oasis animal shelter. As I sat on the floor, a little black and white,
female, Beagle-Border Collie mix puppy crawled into my lap and laid her head
on my shoulder. One look into her sweet, brown eyes and I was in love. We
named her Sugar on the ride home.
The years have passed and slipped by too quickly. Last night our beautiful
baby was rushed into the Lorain County Animal Shelter. At first, we
thought it was something she ate and we had hope for recovery. Unfortunately, a
specialist realized that her heart was surrounded by fluid and during a
procedure to pull the fluid off her heart, he discovered a type of very
aggressive tumor inside her heart. A few hours later, her heart sac was full of
blood again and we had to make the painful decision to let her go. We held her
in our arms as she left us. Then I held her until we got back to our
regular vet. She will be cremated.
Sweet Pea, one of our cats, seems to be taking it the hardest. For the
past couple weeks, she has been licking Sugar's face a lot. Today, as I lay
crying on the bed, Sweet Pea put her arms around Sugar's favorite toy and
collar then laid her head on top of the toy and allowed me to cry into her fur.
We shall miss: the thumping of her tail whenever she saw us; the way she
acted like our touch was the best thing in the entire world by closing her
eyes and looking like she was in heaven with each pet; the way she would
wrestle Tom; the long walks and greeting all her friends; playing ball, tug of
war or it's mine from the head to the tip of the tail; waking up to her
tapping me on the head and snuggling every time my heart acted up; her love of
french fries and anything momma cooked; the softness of her ears and fur;
her love of kittens; the warmth of her body snuggled in our arms as we sleep
or rested on the couch; her half bark half bray that had the potential to
cause ringing in your ears!; the way her favorite toy in her mouth looked
like a giant smile; her love of anything stuffed into the shape of a primate
and the way she liked to un-stuff her toys and spit the stuffing into a
blowing fan to watch it float around the room; her love of the loudest squeaky
toys we could find; the way she opened presents-hers and anyone who was too
slow to open theirs!;--but we will miss our baby more than anything.
We love you Sugar
