Stressed Prank Caller Threatens Police With 4-Ton Bomb
-----------------------------------------------------------------

A man who made nearly 190 prank calls to police, including one
in which he threatened to blow up the Metropolitan Police
Department (MPD) with a 4-ton bomb has been arrested, police said.

The man, Junji Furukawa, 43, was arrested Friday on suspicion of
obstructing officers from carrying out their duties after he made
the prank calls. He has reportedly admitted having phoned police.

"I was stressed out with work and I got irritated," police quoted
him as saying.

In addition to calling the MPD headquarters 189 times, Furukawa
reportedly also made numerous calls to the Imperial Household
Agency, the Japanese Communist Party headquarters, the General
Association of Korean Residents in Japan, New Tokyo International
Airport at Narita, and other organizations.

Investigators said that Furukawa called the main number for the
MPD at about 11 p.m. on March 23, saying, "I've planted a 4-ton
bomb. It's going to go off in four minutes. Get out quick."

After receiving the call the MPD deployed over 50 riot police and
night guards to search the MPD building and its surroundings for
about 30 minutes, but they didn't find anything.

Furukawa reportedly told police that he thought it would be fun
to cause chaos.

"I was drinking. It was fun to see things thrown into confusion."

Furukawa phoned the MPD from his cell phone several times on the
day he made the bomb threat, making obscene comments to a female
worker at the department, police said.
